Craving and Aversions

I thought it would be fun to reflect on my pregnancy and share with you all my weird food habits during this pregnancy. . .

Cravings!

Pickles

Typical pregnancy stereotype. . . but I loved pickles – although not just any pickles… they had to be Claussen Dill pickles!

Orange juice

It just tasted so good! I even cried over it one night. . . seriously – pregnancy hormones are no joke! Winking smile 

Fiber One Bars: Oats and Chocolate

These were my go to snack. As I got further along in my pregnancy, I found that I would have to snack more frequently. This was the perfect size and amount and easy to take with me in the car or my purse.

Aversions

Caribou coffee 

Oh, it was so terrible in the first trimester when my normal caramel skim latte had NO appeal to me. . . Thankfully, it got better into the second and third trimester, and I was able to have my normal (well, half-caffeine) latte in the morning. .. but then just recently into the third trimester my taste buds are playing an evil trick on me and my normally favorite place for lattes – Caribou Coffee – tastes just awful! I hope things turn around again soon!

Fish

I never have really liked fish or the smell of fish, but during pregnancy, I can’t even be around it. If anyone in the lunchroom at work has fish or the worst –tuna fish – I can’t even be in there to eat lunch!

Meat

I have always been picky when it comes to meat, but it has intensified during pregnancy. I was pretty routinely eating turkey sandwiches for lunch until about 2-3 weeks ago, when I had one bite of turkey that was just weird and since then – I can’t even think about eating a turkey sandwiches – seriously, I am almost gagging just thinking about it right now!

Yogurt

I usually love chobani yogurt, but just does not taste good right now. . .

Veggies

My usual salads or side veggie with dinner has been absent for most of this pregnancy. Just doesn’t sound or taste good. Thankfully, I have been able to sneak some veggies into dishes and have been able to snack on fresh baby carrots to get my nutrients in!

I am looking forward to having my taste buds go back to ‘normal’ after the baby is born. I am planning on breast feeding though so it will be interesting to see what changes in my diet I will have to make depending on how they affect the baby!

38 weeks!

The past two weeks:

  • The ladies at work surprised me with a baby shower/potluck!
  • Scott installed the car seat
  • We took a breast feeding class
  • We celebrated Scott’s 31st birthday
  • Minnesota has had record highs for March – 80+ degrees
  • Still running!
    • Took Scott and Abby for a couple slow runs outside with the nice weather. Also, did a run with my Dad and Abby too.
  • My rings still fit. . . but the ankles are swollen after a long day in clinic!
  • Abby seems to know ‘something’ is coming because she is wanting more attention every day! She still wanders into the nursery daily to check things out. . . I hope she still goes in there when the baby comes!
  • When I was out on a walk with Abby, I passed a grandfather with his 2 grandkids, a 6 year old girl and a 4 year old boy. As I got passed them, I hear the boy whisper to his grandfather, “Grandpa, that lady has a baby in her tummy!” So cute!
  • I continue to love every kick, jab and twist of the baby
  • As of the doctors appointment yesterday, baby is 6 pounds 13 ounces!
  • 14 days until the due date!

My pregnancy must-haves

One of the things that was super helpful to me during my pregnancy was reading other people’s blogs (Emily at Daily Garnish and Gina at Fitnessista) who were blogging through their pregnancy. And the pages I always bookmarked were the list of “must-haves.”

So, I thought I would put together my own must-have pregnancy list!

Body pillow

I just bought a Target body pillow with a super soft cuddly (and hot!) cover, but I know Boppy makes a body pillow specifically for pregnancy too.

Stretch mark cream/lotion

I have no idea if it made any difference at all, but it at least made me feel better to lotion up my belly after showers. It also helped with itchy skin. I think the biggest thing for stretch marks is to gain weight slowly thru pregnancy (as much as you can!) I used Palmer’s Cocoa Butter – again from Target. You can spend a lot of money on stretch mark cream and “belly butters” but not sure it is really worth it because they say nothing really prevents stretch marks. . .

Bravado nursing bras

Thank you to Gina for posting about this bra. I bought one about 28 weeks and have been wearing it almost every day since then. I actually just ordered another one and a nursing tank too. They are a little spendy (i.e. more than nursing bras at Target) and not the prettiest, but they are super comfortable and fit really nice.

Pre-natal vitamins

A must-have during pregnancy! As soon as you are thinking about starting a family it is important to get started on pre-natal vitamins. They have extra folic acid to help with baby’s brain and spinal cord development, which is really important during all of pregnancy – but especially early in pregnancy, maybe even before you realize you are pregnant!

Baby Center

A good website for general info about pregnancy and babies. And if you sign up, they will send you weekly emails with updates and information specific to how many weeks pregnant you are! And the most fun thing – they compare baby to a food. . . i.e. when I first started baby was a sesame seed and now he is a Crenshaw melon. (ya I don’t know what that is either. Smile )

Comfortable workout clothes

Just as when you’re not pregnant, when you’re pregnant, working out is easier if you feel good about yourself and have some workout clothes that fit and make you feel cute! I love my shirt that I got from for two fitness. It is extra long to cover the growing belly with side rouching to fit comfortably.

Supportive husband

Someone to hug you when you are crying about orange juice and don’t know why. Someone to tell you every day how beautiful you are. Someone to put together the crib, swing, and install the car seat. Someone who is just as excited about the baby as you are! My husband was/is all of these things and more!

Self control against all cute baby things

There are so many cute baby things out there! Especially if you are addicted to Etsy like I am. Smile The hardest thing is to wait until the baby showers are over and to see what you need before you start buying up the whole baby section!

Healthy diet, exercise and sleep

Good for you and baby! And important for a healthy and happy pregnancy. I think I have had a pretty good pregnancy (so far – knock on wood!) because I have tried to keep a fairly healthy diet and not letting the fact that I am pregnant mean that I can eat ice cream all day without any consequences. I have really kept the fact that any weight I put on during pregnancy, has to come off after pregnancy! Exercise, staying active – for me – running – has been really important to me to keep myself feeling good, keeping tabs on the weight gain and helping with sleep at night! Everyone tells you to sleep as much as you can before the baby comes. . . well..  . that is a good thought, but since you can’t bank sleep, isn’t the most useful advice. But, making sure that you are getting the sleep you need during pregnancy (which might be more than you used to need), is useful to making you feel good throughout your pregnancy!

Just have a few more pictures to hang and we should be ready for baby! I also have some letters that I want to get (puppy themed – of course!) for his name to hang over the crib but have to wait until he is born and we figure out what his name is!

37 weeks today! 20 days to go (if he comes on his due date – which less than 10% of babies do!) Winking smile

36 weeks!

36 weeks. . . officially 9 months pregnant! Wow. That is just crazy. Smile

Your baby is gaining about an ounce a day. He now weighs almost 6 pounds and is more than 18 1/2 inches long.

And he is pointed in the right direction – head down at the last OB appointment!

Some thoughts from the past 2 weeks:

HOT! This morning, Scott woke up and found me in just a t-shirt and underwear, snuggled with my body pillow and no covers. He said just the right thing: “You’re hot!” J I woke up in the middle of the night, so hot, so I took off my flannel pants and threw off all the covers. I can’t sleep without the body pillow, which unfortunately, has a very warm flannel cover. I am usually the one that goes to bed in long sleeves and pants and hogs all the covers, so this is a huge change!

Reflux – I never knew acid reflux could be so awful. Thankfully it only really bothers with working out, but it keeps going after I am done with my work out. Last night I rode the bike on the trainer in the basement and OMG, I thought I was going to die, ok, not really, but almost! I was still able to get my workout done, and took a handful of tums afterwards. . .

Swelling – it has started! Especially after a long day at work. . . boo. Thankfully only in the ankles – wedding ring still fits!

Tired – I feel asleep on the couch last night at 8:30! Scott woke me up at 9 because I was snoring!

Hungry – this baby is growing and needs food! I make it through the day with lots of (healthy) snacks. I don’t think I would have survived my pregnancy without oat and chocolate fiber one bars.

Excited – we got the car seat last night, so I think we are *ready* for the baby. . . meaning we have all the ‘stuff’ but are still both totally freaked out about bringing home a baby! Scott commented last night that it will be so weird to put a baby in the car seat and bring it home. I can’t agree more!

Belly Button watch– still not an outie. . . Scott is still waiting. Winking smile

He went back for seconds. . . Balsamic (crockpot) Chicken

My husband never almost never goes back for seconds. He eats dinner. Thanks me for making said dinner. Then, waits 2 seconds, and asks what  is for dessert (his real love and the reason he runs – see why we are totally made for each other?). But the other night, I made a new recipe – balsamic chicken. And he wasn’t even done with his first serving before he was back in the kitchen for more. He told me three (three!) times what a good dinner this was. . . And then waited 2 seconds and asked what was for dessert – cause hey, some things never change! lol. Smile 

And even more support of how wonderful this recipe was – the next night – he asked if he could have it as leftovers. . . as much as he doesn’t eat seconds… I usually have to trick him into eating leftovers!

The recipe is from SkinnyCrockPot.

And for me – soooo easy to make. Throw all ingredients into the crockpot and cook for 4 hours. Serve over cooked pasta. Sprinkle of parmesan cheese. Done.

Chunks of tomatoes, balsamic softened onions, chicken so tender from cooking in the tomato/balsamic liquid you can shred it with a fork along with a beautiful sauce that goes perfectly with pasta.

Next time: must serve with garlic bread to soak up that awesome sauce!

Balsamic Chicken

Ingredients

  • 4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 T olive oil
  • 1 t each dried oregano, basil, rosemary
  • 1/2 t thyme
  • ground black pepper and salt to taste

Directions

1. Pour olive oil on bottom of slow cocker
2. Add chicken breasts and salt and pepper each breast
3. Put sliced onion on top of chicken
4. Add dried herbs and garlic cloves
5. Pour in vinegar
6. Top with tomatoes
7. Cook on high 4 hours
8. Serve over pasta and top with cheese
